Fall is time for Quilting

With the change of seasons, I always feel eager to get back into my studio for some quilting and painting. This fall, I'm very fortunate to be able to take advantage of a quilt mentoring class offered by one of our local Sunshine Coast art quilters, Pat Crucil. Assignment number one... for me anyways... to learn to free motion stitch. My 30 year old Kenmore sewing machine has just been in for its first proper tuneup, and it's time to see whether the two of us can work together to make pictures out of thread. Fingers crossed.

September seems to be a time of renewal for many of us, more like the start of the new year than January 1st is. If your "new year" calls for a new or renovated web site, drop me an email, or give me a call at 1-604-885-9756, for a free no-obligation quote.

Once again, Gibsons B.C. (famed home of TV's The Beachcomber's) is holding its wonderful fibre arts festival. This is a great event, with a juried show, tons of classes, and a marketplace of all things fibre related.

Furoshiki Bag

Furoshiki Bag
One of my clients, Susan Fletcher, is running a great new business that I'd like to share with you. She has been studying the traditional Japanese arts of Furoshiki and Sashiko and is introducing them to quilters like me who had never heard of them before.

Furoshiki is the art of wrapping things in fabric. Quilt fabric is perfect for this. Furoshiki can be used to refresh old items or gift-wrap presents. What a great way to wrap something for the fibre artist in your life... two gifts in one! Susan sells furoshiki instruction cards wholesale to quilt shops at Alderspring Design (where you can place orders online), and through her retail store About Furoshiki.

Sashiko is the art of handstitching repeated motifs on fabric - traditionally done with white thread on navy blue fabric. Shops can buy Susan's lovely patterns wholesale from Alderspring Design and fibre artists can buy them retail from About Furoshiki. Susan has also created an informative web site for Sashiko Stitchers of all levels.

So... were you wondering where this lovely quilt shop, shown on the home page, is?

It is Keepsake Cottage Fabrics in Bothell, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest. I didn't create their web site for them, but I do recommend you visit their shop if you are in the area. Located in an old barn, with a wonderful interior, this quilt shop has a gorgeous selection of fabrics and friendly staff. It is located in "Country Village", a specialty shopping area in the small town of Bothell.

Keepsake Cottage has the kind of interior that puts me immediately in the mood of "the good old days"; the rustic wood ceilings and the traditional windows create such a nice ambiance that I don't want to leave (and so I look around a bit more, and buy more fabric).
